Try this instead.<\/h1>\n<p><strong>BY\u00a0<a title=\"View user profile.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/user\/faisal-hoque\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FAISAL HOQUE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/category\/emotional-intelligence\">Emotional intelligence <\/a>is an important <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/category\/leadership\">leadership <\/a>skill in the workplace. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/category\/leaders\">Leaders <\/a>who are emotionally intelligent are able to open new lines of communication, create understanding, and help achieve common goals. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Learning to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/category\/empathy\">empathize <\/a>with your employees and coworkers, and remain calm, can help you to address conflicts early before they escalate.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<article class=\"post__article\">\n<div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>You don\u2019t need to be convinced that empathy is a good thing\u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/40457045\/how-to-lead-with-empathy\">not just for ethical reasons but for practical ones, too<\/a>.\u00a0While we\u2019re still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3063692\/five-ways-the-most-effective-leaders-manage-their-emotions\">often cautioned<\/a> to \u201cleave emotions out of it,\u201d being able to put yourself in someone else\u2019s shoes is a hallmark of emotionally intelligent leadership, not to mention just being a good coworker. It can open up new lines of communication, create understanding, and help everyone achieve common goals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Of course, none of that means it\u2019s easy. There are always going to be times when empathy is uniquely difficult to summon and sustain. When the going gets tough, your patience wears thin, and you can feel your frustration rising, it\u2019s enormously difficult to take a deep breath and continue to listen with an open mind. Still, these four\u00a0empathetic questions I\u2019ve learned to ask in difficult situations have helped me keep my cool and get to the bottom of whatever the trouble might be.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Related:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/40529677\/emotionally-intelligent-ways-to-express-these-5-feelings-at-work\">Emotionally Intelligent Ways To Express These 5 Feelings At Work<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>1. \u201cHOW IS THIS SITUATION AFFECTING YOU?\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>No matter how they answer, thank them for sharing their thoughts and let them know you\u2019re going to take their point of view seriously. And as you listen to your direct report or colleague\u2019s answer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/40504026\/how-your-coworkers-make-assumptions-about-you-based-on-body-language\">take note of their body language<\/a>, too. Then encourage the other person to share more specifics about the context or circumstances of their frustration or concern: \u201cYou seem upset about this. Could you tell me what initially happened that led to you feeling that way?\u201d\u00a0Then listen attentively to their feedback so you can try to piece together a causal timeline of events from their own point of view.<\/p>\n<h2>2. \u201cHOW IS THIS KEEPING YOU FROM SUCCEEDING?\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>When employees, coworkers, or business partners know they can open up to you about their challenges, it\u2019s easer to resolve those conflicts early and avoid losing your patience over a much bigger blow-up later. You\u2019ll also help build an open work environment that maximizes everyone\u2019s talents, rather than one suffused by complaints and paranoia. So if you\u2019re feeling irritated by a coworker during a tough predicament, ask what roadblocks are standing in their way. WHAT DO YOU THINK WOULD BE THE IDEAL OUTCOME?<\/h2>\n<p>Even when an entire team or organization is working toward common ends, individuals still tend to nurture their own goals and aspirations\u2013and that\u2019s usually fine! One manager might have her eye on a more advanced leadership position, for example, while a top salesperson may be trying to work his way toward managing a huge account. When tensions run high, reconnecting with individuals\u2019 separate goals can help you tap back into the empathy needed to keep everyone pulling together. WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM THE LAST BIG HURDLE YOU CLEARED?<\/h2>\n<p>Job interviewers love to ask this question, and for good reason\u2013it helps them understand at least one obstacle that has stood in the candidate\u2019s way, and how or she worked through it. You can adapt that same question to navigate stressful workplace scenarios, too. It\u2019s a great way to keep your own emotions in check while asking somebody to reconnect with their own problem-solving skills.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than wallowing in the hazards of the present situation, you can make room for your coworker or team member to vent a bit\u2013creating an outlet for their anxiety at the same time that you help them recall a template for solving the problem at hand. Here, too, tune into both their verbal and nonverbal cues so you can get a feel for how they\u2019ve managed adversity in the past\u2013this way you can coax them into re-adopting the best of those habits and leaving aside the not-so-productive ones.<\/p>\n<p>Empathetic listeners are quiet and patient\u2013particularly when that\u2019s hardest\u2013and they avoid jumping in to fill gaps in the conversation or impose their own assumptions.\u00a0It takes real effort not to let your own negative feelings overwhelm you in the process, but sometimes the best strategy is the simplest one: Just ask a question.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<footer class=\"post__footer\">\n<div class=\"author author--post\">\n<p><strong>Copyright (c) 2018 by Faisal Hoque.
